Timing of the Publication of Third Secret

There has been some confusion over the years concerning this third secret.  The Holy Father was never under any obligation to reveal it.  Whether or not to do that and when to do that were always completely under his own discretion.  For those who are unfamiliar with the hierarchical aspects of the Catholic Church it might help them to know that the visionary Sister Lucia has also confirmed that it was always the Pope's prerogative on how to proceed..

“ … Sister Lucia wrote on the outside envelope that it could be opened only after 1960, either by the Patriarch of Lisbon or the Bishop of Leiria. Archbishop Bertone therefore asked: “Why only after 1960? Was it Our Lady who fixed that date?” Sister Lucia replied: “It was not Our Lady. I fixed the date because I had the intuition that before 1960 it would not be understood, but that only later would it be understood. Now it can be better understood. I wrote down what I saw; however it was not for me to interpret it, but for the Pope.”

Content of Third Secret

Secondly, we can know for certain that the content of this third secret is exactly as quoted here. Over the years as people awaited the revelation of this secret many people had made idle speculation as to its content. Some had even written whole books about it. And yet, never has there been more than three living people, not counting Sister Lucia, who actually knew what it said.  The Holy Father kept it a closely guarded secret, probably thinking that it might cause unwarranted fear or some other adverse reaction if it had been made known under the wrong circumstances.

One individual had witnessed Cardinal Ratzinger reading it.  He stated that he was able to observe that the entire contents of the Third Secret had been printed on one side of one page.  Other than that, nothing else was known publicly, but unfortunately idle minds like to speculate.  Some had become understandably frustrated, but unfortunately also impatient with the sins of some members of the clergy.

God always gives us what we need, but not always what we want.  The defined teachings of the Church were always protected from error, but some - perhaps, since we are all sinners I should say not "some" but rather all of us at some time or another - were not faithfully living or faithfully sharing that uncorrupted message of the Gospel with others.  So, these idle minds had speculated again and again over the years that God had forcefully reprimanded and rebuked all such sinners in the message of the Third Secret.  When they heard that the Third Secret was just as it is printed here, they could not accept that all their idle speculation could have been wrong. And so, they claimed that they knew that it was something different, even though the actual number of people who had read the secret was an extremely small number of people.

Both His Holiness John Paul II, and now Pope Benedict XVI, the two people besides the deceased Popes who had actually read the secret have verified the contents of the above letter.  To question their authenticity in this matter is completely without merit.

“… Pope emeritus Benedict XVI … confirms decisively that ‘the publication of the Third Secret of Fatima is complete,’”
the Vatican statement said.

The Consecration was Completed in 1984

In one sense the consecration to Mary's Immaculate Heart is ongoing as we are called to spread the message so that each of us can consecrate ourselves to Jesus through Mary's Immaculate Heart each day.  As for the consecration that Mary asked of the Pope and all those Bishops in union with him, that was accomplished on March 25, 1984.

Father Robert Fox confirms the following at his web site

Rome has spoken. The Controversy on the Collegial Consecration of Russia should end. Further controversy divides. ...

In that Vatican Commentary the following paragraph should not be missed:

“Sister Lucia personally confirmed that this solemn and universal act of consecration corresponded to what Our Lady wished (“Sim, esta feita, tal como Nossa Senhora a pediu, desde o dia 25 de Marco de 1984”: Yes it has been done just as Our Lady asked, on 25 March 1984”; Letter of November 1989). Hence any further discussion or request is without basis.”

Conversation with Sister Lucia

Secret Moves Pope Toward Collegial Consecration

On July 3, 1990 Sister Lucia wrote the following letter directly to me in care of the Fatima Family Apostolate:
  J+M
The Peace of Christ

Rev. Father Robert J. Fox,

I come to answer your question, "If the consecration made by Pope John Paul II on March 25, 1984 in union with all the bishops of the world, accomplished the conditions for the conversion of Russia, according to the request of Our Lady in Tuy on June 13 of 1929"? Yes, it was accomplished, and since then I have said that it was made.

And I say that no other person responds for me, it is I who receive and open all letters and respond to them.

In union of prayers.

Coimbra, July 3, 1990

Sister Lucia

Russia Being Explicitly Mentioned

Father Robert Fox writes the following at his web site

Of those who say, "but that consecration did not mention Russia explicitly" we reply to look again at the words of the consecration itself. It says: "Forty years ago [consecration of the world] and again ten years later, [explicit consecration of Russia] your servant Pope Pius XII, having before his eyes the painful experiences of the human family, entrusted and consecrated to your Immaculate Heart the whole world, especially the peoples for which by reason of their situation you have particular love and solicitude. This world of individuals and nations we too have before our eyes today..."

Does God not look at the intention of the heart. Is God not intelligent to know what the intention of Pope and bishops was? Were not the words clear that it was now a collegial act of what Pope Pius XII had done in consecration the world and ten years later RUSSIA? Does God have to hear the word "Russia" to hold valid heaven's request when the very words of the consecration said the Pope and bishops were renewing the two consecrations of Pope Pius XII of the world and of Russia?

[July 7, 1952 - Pius XII consecrates the Russian people to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Stop Blaspheming Lucia of Fatima

Even if one accepts the spirit of legalism, it is not valid to hold it was not valid on those terms.

Yet untold efforts in many countries continue involve spending time and millions of dollars claiming Russia has never been consecrated rather than simply spreading the message of faith and love and knowledge of the faith so as to save families and save Russia sooner with what the Immaculate Heart of Mary has already accomplished through her intercession. At the same time strong accusations are often leveled against those who claim the conditions are fulfilled and rather than argue whether the Consecration took place now we must pray, act and sacrifice to help Russia. ...

I agreed with him at this sad division which keeps the beautiful message of Fatima from being known and recognized. It is contrary to the very call for unity which is at the heart of the Fatima message. While we would love to have unity with these others, yet, we cannot say opposite to what the bishops of Fatima, Sister Lucia and the Pope himself have said. To attack those to whom the message is especially confided as to its integrity is not on the side of the good holy angels.

End Quotation

Nations Restored

Pope John Paul II consecrated the world, including Russia to Mary's Immaculate Heart on March 25, 1984  [Feast of the Annunciation.]   It was  *AFTER*  this that Gen. Secy. Mikhail Gorbachev came to power and promoted many social reforms.  Solidarity was legalized in Poland in 1988, and won in elections in 1989.  In that same year the Communist Bloc in Eastern Europe collapsed and the Berlin Wall was opened in November of that year.

Russia no longer persecutes the religious freedom of its neighboring countries, and this came about after this consecration in 1984.

[ My own personal opinion is that Mary still wishes us to spread devotion to Jesus through her Immaculate Heart to bring about the complete fulfillment of our own conversion and that of Russia. ]

Nations had been annihilated by being consumed into the USSR.

Now those nations are restored in peace.

On December 8, 1991 the presidents of the Soviet republics of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus met secretly and signed the Belavezha Accords agreeing to dissolve the Soviet Union, and replace it with a loose, voluntary union, the Commonwealth of Independent States. ...

[On ] 25 December 1991, Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev had resigned, declaring his office extinct, and handed over the Soviet nuclear missile launching codes to Russian President Boris Yeltsin. That same evening at 7:32 P.M. the Soviet flag was lowered from the Kremlin and replaced with the Russian tricolor.[2] The dissolution of the world's first and largest Communist state also marked an end to the Cold War. ...
