In John chapter 21, St. John is implying in three different ways that
the disciples are lacking in wisdom.
John 21:4-7
“Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the beach;
yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.
5
Jesus said to them,
“Children,
have you any fish?” They answered him,
“No.”
For a disciple to not recognize his Lord suggests something is wrong.
A disciple is supposed to recognize his Lord. They were lacking in
wisdom in not knowing Him
What are Children ?
Children are those you lack the wisdom that comes with age.
The words in red all suggest that the disciples were lacking wisdom.
To have no measure of fish also suggests to lack wisdom. This will be
explained later.
John 21:6
"He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you
will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it
in, for the quantity of fish.
7
That
disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter,
“It is the Lord!”
This passage should remind us of John’s previous text.
John 13:21-26
“(Jesus said), “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.”
22
The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke.
23
One of his
disciples, whom Jesus loved, was lying close to the breast of Jesus;
24
so Simon Peter beckoned to him and said, “Tell us who it is of whom he
speaks.”
25
So lying thus, close to the breast of Jesus, he said to him, “Lord, who
is it?”
26
Jesus answered …”
Seven disciples went fishing.
Yet, only one, in the drawing is fishing. He is the youngest, the one
with his head positioned on another's breast.
It is John. He was the only one to recognize it was Jesus.
And here he is the only one catching the fish.
Acquiring the fish is symbolizing the acquiring of wisdom.
Therefore, the fish symbolize wisdom.
