Title: Velislav Bible , Velislavova bible, or Biblia picta Velislai

Date of Origin: about AD  1340

The Velislav Bible plays a key role in Bohemian manuscript

painting of the first half of the fourteenth century,

It is one of the most beautiful medieval

Bohemian manuscripts. It is a heavily illustrated

manuscript that contains only short selections of the

text, that instruct the reader about the story depicted.

Originally, there were 800 scenes, but many are missing.

Today, the manuscript contains 747 pictures from The Old Testament and The New Testament.

Unfortunately, what would be the most treasured images are missing.

It shows the

"Passion of Christ, but the final grande is

missing, namely the scenes with the carrying of the cross and

the crucifixion itself."

Scholar   L u c i e   D o l e ž a l o v á    explains:

“The fact that the scenes of the Passion of Christ are missing is, however,
probably due to the reception of the Velislav Bible rather than some secret
plan; the depictions of Jesus on the cross were frequently used for meditation in
the context of personal devotion, and thus it is possible that a fervent reader
tore out from the codex the leafs with the Passion.”

Was the purpose of this Bible to be for the exclusive possession of some rich prince or queen ?

This Bible is stored at National Library of the Czech Republic.  It is considered a national treasure and has been studied intently by many there.  Scholar Lucie Doležalová has published an impressive academic paper on it.  She goes into great detail examining the unique qualities of this Bible.  She proves that this Bible was not intended, nor was it used as a prop on some coffee table as a trophy for rich royalty.  She states, “the Velislav Bible was indeed read is made clear from the Czech and Latin glosses which date to the end of the 14th or the beginning of the 15th century, and the German glosses which date to the 17th.”

Interestingly she notes that , “Lenka Panušková and Anna Kernbach persuasively argued that the book might have been produced for the school at Vyšehrad in Prague.
(See the contributions of Panušková and Kernbach in Panušková, ed. [fn. 24])”

She brilliantly explains how the pictures and the text, which at least often is not verbatim scriptural quotations, are meant to be an aid in helping a person remember and learn the many biblical stories therein.

“The Velislav Bible, just like other medieval Latin retellings and

mnemonic tools, operated within an environment in which the Bible

was generally known. Thus, these texts work on the assumption that

the readers are familiar with the Bible, and they offer neither a basic

initiation to, nor a coherent explanation of the biblical text. Instead,

they provide memory triggers.”

She makes a convincing case that the arrangement of the Velislav Bible in regards to the order of the scenes as well as the text shows that its purpose was to implant into the readers mind both the stories of the Bible as well as their God given purpose.

“Although the moral improvement in the reader is not explicitly

stated as an aim in medieval biblical mnemonics and retellings, they strive to make the readers internalize and accommodate the Bible in their memory exactly with moral edification in mind.

She carefully points out the differences between the Velislav Bible and mnemonic works based on symbols.  Velislav Bible depicts scenes of the Bible, while the mnemonic works reduce biblical scenes into symbols for the purpose of making mnemonic visualizations.  Then she notes, “Scenic rather than symbolic approach to depicting biblical contents obviously does not result in lesser degree of memorability.”

“All is set within the context of salvation history and stresses the necessity of distinguishing between good and evil and of obedience to God. It is not a mnemonic aid in a strict sense, although it is closely connected to memory.”

She explains how the arraignment of the material puts emphasis on important and powerful women in the Bible.

Writing about the books of Judges and Judith she says, “In both the story of Samson and the story of Judith an important role is played by a beautiful and dangerous woman — Delilah manages to lure out of Samson the secret of his strength and thus destroys him, while Judith enchants and inebriates (the King Nebuchadnezzar’s commander in chief of his armed forces,)  Holofernes” and dispatches him before he carries out his plan to kill all the Jews.

“Samson is a prototype of Christ — he is born in order to save Jews

from the subjection to Philistines, and he dies while performing this

mission.  Judith all by herself kills Assyrian leader Holofernes.”

And unfortunately the folio after 148 is also missing.

It would be reasonable suppose it would have been a depiction

of the catch of the 153 Fish.

See  148v:

Jesus eats before the disciples (Lk 24: 41-43),
Jesus appears to the disciples at Lake Tiberias
(Jn 21: 1-3)

If you compare the following it is easy to make out some of the text

manifestavit - appears.

ihesus - Jesus.

mare Tiberiadis - Sea of Tiberias.

Thomas Nathanaël

Second line :

filii Zebedæi -sons of Zebede … duo -two (more Apostles)

Petrus: Vado piscari. Dicunt ei: Venimus et nos tecum.

Peter : I am going out fishing; and they said, We, too, will go with thee.

Biblical themes or images are contrasted.

Jesus Christ is shown with a halo around His head,

while the Anti-christ is shown with a little devil next to him.

"The basic topic is distinguishing good from

evil rather than a warning from a real embodiment of evil and the

approaching the end of the world."
