The Catholic Church prevented the people from reading the Bible by keeping it in Latin.

LATIN  OR  VERNACULAR  BIBLES,  WHICH  WERE  THE  BEST  ?  

Why the Catholic Church rejected the Protestant Bibles. The Catholic Church promoted the Latin Vulgate over the Protestant "reformation" era Bibles not in order to keep the Bible from the people but to ensure that the copy that they had was the most faithful and accurate text.
